How To Wear A Black Dress 4 Ways

Today I'm thrilled to share the next installment of Project 1-4-4 - The Little Black Dress. For those of you who are new, #Project144 stands for 1 item, 4 seasons, 4 ways and in each post I share how you can style a core basic across all four seasons.

Through this series I hope to demonstrate just how versatile a few well thought out, core basics can be. With the addition of some carefully chosen accessories and layers, these pieces can truly take you throughout the entire year. The end result is a wardrobe that works for you rather than against you.

Below, I have outlined what I look for in my perfect LBD and how I like to style mine in winter, spring, summer and fall and I hope they inspire you to pull out your LBD the next time you're not sure what to wear.

My Perfect LBD

As you know, versatility is the name of the game for me. When choosing foundational pieces for my wardrobe, I favor high quality fabrics and classic cuts that can be worn countless ways throughout the year. The LBD is no exception, and to ensure maximum versatility, mine is in medium weight cotton and features short sleeves and a fit and flare style.

Choosing a cotton dress ensures that I have a piece that is both warm with layers in fall and winter, but also cool without them during spring and summer - jersey is another wonderful option for this. The fit and flare style flatters my body shape while also offering a silohette that can be easily dressed up or down with the addition of layers and accessories. Additionally, I prefer my dress to have short sleeves because that's what I'm most comfortable in, but I would recommend anything from 3/4 length to cap sleeves for the most versatility.

Below, I have linked a few classic LBD's that I think would make fantastic additions to any wardrobe.

Winter

When I want a break from my jeans and sweater uniform during the winter I love to pull out my LBD. To keep the look cold-weather appropriate, I like to layer on tights and a great cable knit sweater. To protect my head and feet from the cold and my hair from the snow, I love to pair this look with a wool fedora and chic ankle booties.

Spring

Throughout the spring I love to wear my LBD with a silk scarf and classic belt for a sophisticated look. To keep the outfit from feeling too formal I like to top it off with some comfy flats.

Summer

As the temperatures climb throughout the summer I love to wear my LBD for a no-brainer look that also keeps me cool. In an effort to keep the black from feeling too harsh, I pair my dress with a straw hat (boaters are my fave!) and some great sunnies. For footwear I love a classic pair of sandals that can take me from brunch to dinner and a long necklace for just the right amount of sparkle.

Fall

When the temperatures start to cool, I love to pair my LBD with a tweed or herringbone blazer and riding boots. When also combined with a great leather belt and stand-out scarf, this combination is the perfect mix of collegiate and casual.

To go along with this post I put together a little styling video that you can view below or on my YouTube channel. If you aren't subscribed yet, I'd love if you did so I can keep you updated on all my uploads.

Until next time,

Audrey
