Today I'm thrilled to share the next installment of Project 1-4-4 - The Little Black Dress. For those of you who are new, #Project144 stands for 1 item, 4 seasons, 4 ways and in each post I share how you can style a core basic across all four seasons.
Through this series I hope to demonstrate just how versatile a few well thought out, core basics can be. With the addition of some carefully chosen accessories and layers, these pieces can truly take you throughout the entire year. The end result is a wardrobe that works for you rather than against you.
Below, I have outlined what I look for in my perfect LBD and how I like to style mine in winter, spring, summer and fall and I hope they inspire you to pull out your LBD the next time you're not sure what to wear.
My Perfect LBD
As you know, versatility is the name of the game for me. When choosing foundational pieces for my wardrobe, I favor high quality fabrics and classic cuts that can be worn countless ways throughout the year. The LBD is no exception, and to ensure maximum versatility, mine is in medium weight cotton and features short sleeves and a fit and flare style.
Choosing a cotton dress ensures that I have a piece that is both warm with layers in fall and winter, but also cool without them during spring and summer - jersey is another wonderful option for this. The fit and flare style flatters my body shape while also offering a silohette that can be easily dressed up or down with the addition of layers and accessories. Additionally, I prefer my dress to have short sleeves because that's what I'm most comfortable in, but I would recommend anything from 3/4 length to cap sleeves for the most versatility.
Below, I have linked a few classic LBD's that I think would make fantastic additions to any wardrobe.
